RIM has said that it plans to bring mobile applications to India that will appeal to the consumer segment. RIM may also launch a India-specific handset in the future.

Apple iPhone 5 to sport 4G

Theories abound as to what Apple is packing into its next generation smartphone, but one industry expert believes the iPhone 5 will feature hardware to connect to ultra-fast 4G networks.

The upgrade should give consumers a boost in data speed over the 3G predecessors.

This echo's similar comments from Verizon's CEO last month as the iPhone 4 began to hit Verizon stores.

At that time, Dan Mead hinted that Apple was interested in 4G technology and working on devices compatible with Verizon's 4G network.

"You'll see more coming from Apple on LTE," he said. "They understand the value proposition of LTE and I feel very confident that they are going to be a part of it.
The new device will have communications chips that can work on the fast 4G networks that wireless carriers in the US and other markets are beginning to roll-out, according to Peter Misek of Jefferies & Co.
But the 4G capabilities won't simply be limited to Verizon, Misek told clients Wednesday.

"We believe Apple wants its next phone to be LTE capable and have a chipset compatible with both AT&T (T) and Verizon [Communications (VZ)]," writes Misek.

Because of these innovations, Misek is pushing the release date of the iPhone 5 back to the "September/October" timeframe.

Apple isn't new to voice-controlled interface. Support for voice commands is offered in both the iPhone and iPod Touch, which allows users to choose songs and artists by speaking into the microphone.

Sony VAIO P Netbook

The 8-inch Sony VAIO P Series Lifestyle netbook returns with a refresh to the original series models. This ultraportable netbook packs a more powerful processor than the last version (but still maintains an Intel Atom), Windows 7 Home Premium instead of Vista, a larger solid state drive with SATA (all the refreshed models have SSDs now), longer-lasting standard battery life, a touchpad built into the screen, a display switch option (switches much like a tablet or smartphone), a few other new features, and more--if you’re willing to pay the high price tag. Sony has made no change to the overall size, so it can still fit in your back pocket. We have tested this refresh against our benchmarks and will show you how it matches up to the older version and up to other netbooks in the market in terms of performance and design.

Our Sony Vaio P (refresh) features the following specifications:

* Intel Atom Z550 (2.00 GHz, 512 KB cache) processor
* Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit
* 8-inch glossy backlit LCD display (1600 x 768 resolution max)
* 2GB DDR2 533MHz RAM (1 DIMM)
* 256GB solid state drive (up to 128GB on other models)
* Intel GMA 500 integrated graphics
* Intel HD Audio
* 802.11 b/g/n WiFi
* Bluetooth Integrated Stereo A2D (2.1 + EDR)
* Sony “Motion Eye” webcam and mic
* Standard 2-cell, 2500 mAh Li-Ion battery
* Size: 9.6 (W) x 0.78 (H) x 4.72 (D) inches
* Weight: 1.3 lbs with standard battery

Lenovo ThinkPad Edge 14

We reviewed the model with an Intel Core i3-330M and 2GB of RAM, but since this model has an Intel Core i5-480M at 2.66 GHz CPU with Turbo Boost technology and 4GB of RAM that can easily be upgraded to 8GB, it's safe to say that this particular model can be a multimedia notebook with fast multi-tasking power. Hard drive storage space is decent at this price too--it comes built with a 500GB capacity hard drive at 5400RPM.

That aside, the Edge 14 may regularly be used as a small business notebook as well, as we said in our review. The screen size, keyboard, speakers, graphics card, and and built-in fingerprint reader are considered more on par with a business-grade notebook type, even with the processor and memory proving to be fully capable. We said the keyboard is "comfortable and easy to type on" and the Edge 14 features a 1366 x 768 resolution WXGA glossy display. The notebook comes with a standard integrated HD graphics card with shared memory.

In our battery test the Edge 14 stayed on for four hours and 33 minutes. The system comes with a 6-cell 57Wh battery.

More ThinkPad Edge 14 specifications:

* Three USB 2.0 ports
* HDMI port
* HD audio
* Built-in camera/microphone
* 4.9 lbs

Asus G73JH

Alienware M17x Take Center Stage

Dell "Stage" On All Dell Notebooks and Mobile Devices
It's no surprise that most consumers use a variety of electronic devices for staying connected. The average American home may have a desktop PC, a notebook or netbook, a media tablet, and a smartphone--any one of which might be used for watching video and listening to music. Dell realized this and has announced it is extending its "Dell Stage" software across the company’s entire consumer portfolio. The software is intended to make it easier and faster to transfer your favorite music, photos, movies and TV shows between multiple devices.

The team on our DesktopReview.com site first saw the Dell Stage software last year on touch-screen models of the Inspiron One all-in-one desktop. The software also appears on the Inspiron duo convertible tablet. Stage uses a tile-based user interface that works on both touchscreen and non-touchscreen devices. Later this year, Dell plans to add the sync capability via software update to all Stage-equipped devices allowing the same photos, videos, music, documents and other files to be synchronized across Dell PCs, tablets and smartphones.

New Dell XPS 17 3D Laptop

XPS 17 3D Notebook
Dell revived the XPS brand of notebooks in late 2010 with the XPS 13 and XPS 15 multimedia notebooks, but arguably the most impressive entertainment experience comes from the new 17-inch XPS 17 3D laptop with built-in 3D display (using NVIDIA Nvision 3D glasses, sold separately). The new 3D capable XPS 17, like the rest of the XPS lineup, features JBL-branded sound, an integrated subwoofer and glossy high-definition screens

This is the first Dell laptop with native support for 3D in both the display as well as the graphics card. The XPS 17 with 3D display comes equipped with the NVIDIA GeForce GT 555M graphics card to provide the rendering muscle needed to generate stereoscopic 3D images at fast enough frame rates for HD video playback. The XPS 17 3D laptop also features NVIDIA 3DTV Play software, allowing movie lovers and hardcore gamers to connect their XPS laptop to a compatible 3D HDTV and enjoy 3D Blu-ray disc playback or play PC games in 3D. Dell will also be including the newest generation of Intel Core i7 processor options from the Intel Sandy Bridge platform.

Windows Thin PC

Windows Thin PC (WinTPC) was announced officially in early February 2011, with the company noting at the time that this particular flavor of the Windows client was designed for customers leveraging virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) environments.

Back in February 2011, the software giant also promised that WinTPC would be made available for download in the first quarter of this year.

It looks like Microsoft lived up to the promise, with the first Customer Technology Preview (CTP) of Windows Thin PC planned for delivery by the end of March 2011.

WiFi, ZigBee battle on Smart Grid

The proliferation of electronic devices and appliances in homes and their impact on the efficiency and cost of smart-grid electrical power has given rise to a public debate over whether Wi-Fi or ZigBee represents the most energy-efficient way to deal with the situation.
On one side is General Electric, which argues that ZigBee is more energy efficient than Wi-Fi. On the other side, the Wi-Fi Alliance maintains that "Wi-Fi offers unsurpassed capabilities for the smart grid" and that GE's recent study hailing ZigBee "is flawed, resulting in inaccurate findings." The Wi-Fi Alliance on Monday released its rejoinder to GE's early December white paper.
In its report, a team of GE engineers and technicians from the appliances and lighting units studied Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and ZigBee solutions to determine which of the existing technologies would best minimize the energy impact of homae energy networks. The GE team dismissed Bluetooth quickly, arguing that its limited range made it unsuitable for home networking of appliances and other products.
In comparing Wi-Fi with ZigBee, GE said it found that components for ZigBee-based devices were less expensive than Wi-Fi components. In addition, the GE investigators said ZigBee's mesh networking capability resulted in energy savings as did other features of the ZigBee standard.
The GE team argued that overall home network energy cost savings for ZigBee over Wi-Fi would result in theoretical annual savings of USD 315 million based on an assumed population of 750 million devices.
In its release rebutting the GE findings, the Wi-Fi Alliance said the GE investigators based their findings in part on older, less efficient Wi-Fi technology that has been upgraded since the GE report was issued.

hp world

The Personal Systems Group of HP India is looking at revamping and rebuilding its HP World stores in order to improve customer experience.

Said Sunil Dutt, VP, PSG, HP India, "We have recently appointed Ranjivjit Singh as PSG Chief Marketing Officer. With him on board, we are putting in place a plan to revamp our retail stores. There is a significant change happening in customer buying behavior and our stores need to reflect that. "

HP PSG has also strengthened the channel marketing team for consumer business. Deepti Dang, who for the last eight months had been handling marketing for both the consumer and commercial segment, has been moved to the new role of Channel Marketing Manager with a clear focus on driving retail marketing and channel development.

"Deepti, who has given us successful campaigns for G-series Pavilion notebooks and Snap-on-Covers, will work with Ranjivjit Singh and Vishnu Taimini, Director of Consumer Sales to revitalize HP PSG brand experience at our retail stores and increase customer touch points . She will be responsible for running channel promotions, events, schemes, trainings, A & P management and compliance, retail refurbishments, point-of-sale, collateral development, channel marcom and PR, "informed Dutt.
